I haven’t really understood the saying “When life gives you lemon, Make lemonades” when I was young but as I grow older and tougher, I realized that this is one of the best mantras out there that people should take by heart. This photo basically explains what it means. It says “The happiest people don’t have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.”
To further explain this, I will share one of the scenarios I’ve experienced recently in a business conference I’ve attended. Many established professionals are there and the talks and workshops are really good. But one simple thing caught my attention. There is a coffee machine there are porcelain cups beside it as if telling everybody, help yourself out to the coffee.
Hours passed and more and more people get their own coffee until the cups are all out. People who tasted it still want more coffee because it really tastes good and some haven’t even tasted it. Unfortunately, they really ran out of those porcelain cups and they just put a simple stack of cups next to the coffee. It’s surprising how only a few people drink that coffee again with only those plastic cups to drink on even though they know how well it tasted. I drink that coffee both with porcelain and plastic cups, taste hasn’t change at all, and it’s still the great coffee that it is.
Now think of it this way. The coffee is everything you have in life, and the cups are just the tools to hold your life and taste it. It doesn’t matter what cup it is you use as long as you tasted that great coffee.
Sometimes, if you concentrate on the cup, you fail to enjoy and savor the coffee. Like when we concentrate on what we don’t have, we fail to enjoy what we have. Again, “The happiest people don’t have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.”
In life, if you want to experience true happiness try to remind this to yourself every day. Remember not to focus on what you don’t have and focus on what you have. Because what you have right now – is all you have. And if you don’t maximize and make the best of it, you are sacrificing the only happiness you can ever have that is present right now. And who knows where your best can lead you. It can even lead to the possibility of you having everything you want to in the end.
Remember there are countless examples of people who started from the bottom with nothing at all and now they are all on top like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Oprah. There are also countless people who had been rejected and been put down but they still do their best and succeed at the end like JK Rowling, Mark Zuckeberg and even Isaac Newton. By making the best of what you have, smart work, commitment and faith, you will become successful too. It may take you a month, or a year or even ten years, your time to succeed will come.
