Hope this is an eye opener for some of us…..read it then I’ll put in my 2 cents in…
One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.
They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.
On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?”
“It was great, Dad.”
“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked.
“Oh yeah,” said the son.“So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father.
The son answered:
“I saw that we have one dog and they had four.
We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.
We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.
Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.
We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.
We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.
We buy our food, but they grow theirs.
We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.”
The boy’s father was speechless.
Then his son added, “Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.”
Isn’t perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don’t have.
Appreciate every single thing you have, especially your friends!
Pass this on to friends and acquaintances and help them refresh their perspective and appreciation.“Life is too short and friends are too few.”
SO WHO EXACTLY ARE POOR PEOPLE????? THIS IS IT. This the whole thing. This is life. I am not really one to talk though…I also get caught up in what we own, what we can show off to our friends, family, girls/guys we want to impress. It is a lifelong struggle to make me realize – POSSESSIONS is not what measures a person. We cannot carry these materials with us when we die! I have to keep reminding myself this too.
there’s another saying I like – “ignorance is bliss” – and in a way that is true when measuring how much money one person has. The less we know about this world, the easier it is to deal with things.
another idea – “We are but shadows and dust” is a quote I remember from the gladiator movie – and think to The Man in The Arena idea, the struggle is beautiful. Life is a journey, and we cannot take with us all these houses, cars, jewelry, etc. And most of it deteriorates over time….ie loses value.
So what is the purpose of life? Haha, well I am not one to answer that, but I would have to say it has to do with surrounding yourself with good people, learning as much as you can, sharing that knowledge, and having a positive influence on the generations following you.
Thanks to Uncle Bill for passing this poem along to me. It was great.

I agree to that…
1. surrounding yourself with good people
2. learning as much as you can
3. sharing that knowledge
4. having a positive influence on the generations following you
One of the biggest though is…
Your life experiences…
…and sitting idle just don’t cut it. Good work to you for getting out there and making things happen Mike! You inspire us all.
